Q: I may need to consult a landscaper. How do I get a competitive bid for my project?

A: Solicit at least three bids for the work you need; do not automatically accept the lowest. Make sure all bids are based on the same set of specifications. Discuss the bids in detail with each contractor, and make sure you understand the reasons for any variations in price. Sometimes a higher price may be worth it, if the materials to be used are of higher quality or the work is more extensive.

Beware of any bid substantially lower than the others. It probably indicates that the contractor has made a mistake or is not including all the work quoted by his or her competitors. You may be headed for a dispute with your contractor if you accept an abnormally low bid.

Don't forget the old adage, "If the offer sounds too good to be true, it probably is!"

Q: Do you provide written estimates?

A: Yes, Prestonwood does provide written estimates. Our well experienced sales representatives will be more than happy to meet you at your site and give their expert opinion of your job, and they will also give you a written quote.

Q: What is the best time of year to seed?

A: Ground preparation is the most important step in seeding. You can seed March through October, depending on the weather conditions of course. Although, the ideal time to seed is late August through October, when the temperature is 60-70 degrees, we have adequate rain, and there is no competition with weeds.

Q: Is it alright to install trees and shrubs in the winter?

A: Yes, as long as the ground is not frozen and the root ball has been stored properly. In the winter there is plenty of moisture in ground so you may not need to water your tree or shrub as much.

Q: Can sod be installed in the winter?

A: Yes, as long as the ground conditions are favorable. It is a good time because sod is in the dormant stage and will require little maintenance. Just remember, ground preparation is the key to installing sod.

Q: What is the best type of mulch to use?

A: Fine shredded hard wood mulch. This is a twice shredded dark mulch that is natural to the environment, composted well to enrich soil, helps maintain moisture, and provides insulation.

Q: Do your plants come with a guarantee?

A: If we install your plants, we guarantee them for one year with a one time replacement.

Landscape FactLandscape Tip

Do your tree homework. Do your research before planting a tree next to a building or foundation. Trees with shallow roots, such as Bradford Pears, can cause considerable damage by pushing against concrete foundations, sidewalks or driveways. They can also remove moisture from shallow depths, which can lead to ground shifting.
